Employee Spotlight: Allison Tierney

Q:  What is your role at LUBA?

I am a new business underwriter. I mainly work with agents to determine the right coverage and arrive at appropriate pricing.

Q:  How long have you been in the insurance industry?

I originally worked in mortgage. I switched industries in 2007, and I’ve been with LUBA since. At LUBA, I began as an underwriting assistant. I was then promoted to renewal underwriting and subsequently began working in our new business underwriting division.

Q:  How do you help LUBA agents?

I’d like to think we help our agents in many different ways, but I particularly enjoy helping young agents who are just getting started. It’s rewarding to acquaint them with accepted procedures and policies. Hopefully my role ensures their future success in the insurance business.

Q:  What are the trends you’ve seen in the industry and where you think it’s going?

Fortunately for us and our agents, insurance is necessary and isn’t going anywhere. Many types of insurance are required by law.

I have the opportunity to learn about different types of businesses every day. I’m always impressed with the work ethic that I see in individuals who are willing to start their own businesses. Our industry needs insurers like ours who are willing to work with businesses of all sizes. Insurance is an industry that experiences trends and cycles. At LUBA, we strive to anticipate changes while offering reasonable prices and dependable service.

Q:  When it comes to pricing, what gives clients leverage?

Sometimes it’s cut and dry, but clients can often qualify for better pricing based on favorable loss history and safety practices. If they are willing to identify the sources of their claims and can demonstrate policies and procedures to improve their results, we at LUBA are better able to provide the right coverage at a fair price.

Q:  What’s your personal work philosophy?

I strive every day to give agents and policyholders more than they expect. Part of my job is to sense frustration and to do my best to see things from the other person’s point of view. I never want to be the source of someone’s bad day.

Q:  What is your favorite thing about summer?

My favorite thing about summer is that my kids do not have homework! [Chuckles] My husband and I both work full time, so our vacation time is limited in terms of traveling. We try to make it to Lake Wawasee in Northern Indiana for his family reunions. It’s very nice, but I wouldn’t say it’s relaxing. With hundreds of Tierneys, it’s a very active vacation!
